This week GGT were proud to support a compelling and moving event held by Read with me to showcase their work with Gloucester schools in a bid to attract vital funding to meet the demand for their support which is already 'changing lives', which brought a tear to the eye of many in the audience.
Hosted at Grange School in Tuffley, attendees from local organisations and businesses heard from the Head and Assistant Head from Robinswood and Grange schools, but most importantly from the children who have been benefitting from reading with volunteers once a week.
Imogen from Grange said: "I like getting lost in the stories, I like to imagine I'm one of the characters. Reading is really important, it can change your life."
Linda Cohen, Founder of Read with me, told attendees: "Many of the children we hear read are never heard to read or read to at home, and statistics tell us 200,000 children will leave primary school unable to read. We're now hearing 1,000 children read every week in Gloucester and the results have been outstanding - in a year 1 class where only 45% were achieving the expected standard in reception, by the end of the year 80% have now reached the standard.
"But now it's crunch time. It only costs £50 per week to hear children read twice a week for a year but we now need to reach 2,500 children as soon as possible and that's going to mean scaling up to meet the demands so we're launching a new campaign to raise £125,000 in vital funds to make it happen."
Charlotte Holloway, Assistant Head of School at Grange said: "For many of our children this is their favourite part of the day. We know that a love of reading can improve their future prospects hugely, and if we can get to them early enough, a love of reading will stay with them forever."
Alison Walker, Head of School at Moat added: "Just six minutes of reading has been shown to reduce stress levels by up to 70%, and they need that, our children do get stressed."
Read with me will also be continuing to run drop in reading sessions and their hugely popular 'Not so secret bookclubs' over the summer holidays at locations including Robinswood Hill.
